How to Appear in ChatGPT and Google AI Answers: GEO for Small Business

Avshalom Entes · October 2026 · 7 min read

To appear in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI answers, a small business needs pages that directly answer the questions customers ask, in plain language, with specific facts (prices, areas served, process, timelines), marked up with structured data so machines can read them, and consistent business details across Google Business Profile and the main directories. AI engines cite pages that answer a question clearly in the first paragraph and that look trustworthy and consistent elsewhere on the web. This is called generative engine optimization (GEO), and for a small business it is mostly about writing honest, specific answer pages rather than any trick.

How AI answers choose sources

When someone asks ChatGPT or Google "who does bookkeeping automation for restaurants in Austin", the engine searches, reads a handful of pages, and composes an answer with citations. It favors pages that: answer the exact question near the top, contain concrete details it can quote, are structured (headings, lists, tables, FAQ), and belong to a business whose name, address and services match across Google, Yelp, the BBB and the site itself. Thin pages, pages that bury the answer under marketing, and businesses with inconsistent listings get skipped.

The seven pieces of GEO for a small business

  1. Answer pages. One page per real question: "how much does X cost in [city]", "what to automate first", "do you serve [area]". First paragraph answers it in two or three sentences that could be quoted on their own. This page you are reading is built that way.
  2. Specific facts. Prices or ranges, timelines, what is included, who it is for and not for. AI engines quote numbers and skip vague claims.
  3. Structured data. Schema.org markup for the business (LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService), each service, each FAQ and each article. It is invisible to visitors and exactly what machines read.
  4. Consistent listings. Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp, industry directories: same name, phone, address, hours, categories.
  5. Indexing. A sitemap submitted to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, no accidental "noindex", fast pages.
  6. Trust signals. A real about page, a named person, a phone number, reviews you did not write, results stated plainly without inflation.
  7. Measurement. Search Console for impressions and queries, analytics for referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and Google AI features, and a monthly manual check of ten questions in each engine.

Writing a page that gets cited

DoAvoid
Open with the direct answerOpening with "In today's fast-paced world"
Numbers, steps, tables, definitionsAdjectives: best, leading, cutting-edge
One idea per paragraph, descriptive headingsLong paragraphs that mix three topics
Say when the service is not a fitClaiming to be right for everyone
Real prices or honest ranges"Contact us for pricing" with nothing else
FAQ with self-contained answersFAQ answers that say "see above"
💡 Write down the twenty questions customers actually ask you on the phone. Those are your first twenty answer pages, and they are better than anything a keyword tool suggests.

GEO vs SEO

They overlap mostly. Good SEO fundamentals (indexable site, clear structure, real content, listings) are required for GEO. The difference is emphasis: SEO optimizes for ranking a page; GEO optimizes for being quoted in a composed answer. That means shorter, more direct paragraphs, more explicit facts, FAQ sections, and comparison tables, because those are what an engine lifts into its answer. A page that ranks third on Google can be the one cited by ChatGPT if it states the answer most clearly.

What GEO cannot do

It cannot make an AI engine recommend a business that has no reviews, no consistent listings, and three pages of marketing copy. It cannot guarantee a mention for any specific question; engines vary their sources and change often. It does not replace Google Ads for immediate leads; it is a months-long investment that compounds. And no amount of markup rescues content that is vague or inflated; engines increasingly check claims against other sources. If you are not willing to publish real prices, real scope and honest limits, GEO is not for you.

⚠️ Do not generate 200 near-identical pages with a city name swapped in. Engines and Google both treat that as spam, and it can hurt the pages that were doing well.

What a done-for-you package includes

At Ratz Levad the GEO/SEO package starts at $1,900 and covers: an audit of the current site and listings, 50 answer pages written from your real questions and prices, structured data for the business, services, FAQs and articles, indexing setup in Search Console and Bing, listings cleanup, and analytics with AI referral tracking, delivered in about a week. An optional content retainer at $470 a month adds new answer pages and refreshes existing ones as your questions change. If you want a site to put it on, websites start at $1,200 including domain. Prices exclude tax and are fixed in writing before work starts.

Doing it yourself

You can. Start with ten answer pages written the way this guide describes, add FAQ schema (many site builders have a plugin), claim and fix your Google Business Profile, submit a sitemap, and check ten questions in ChatGPT and Google each month. Expect to see movement in two to four months. The same thinking applies to automating the business itself: start small, measure, expand. See what to automate first and, for the cost side of both, automation cost in the US. For lead handling once the inquiries start arriving, lead management automation.

FAQ

What is GEO?

Generative engine optimization: making your website the source that ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI answers quote. For a small business it means direct answer pages, specific facts, structured data and consistent listings.

How does ChatGPT decide which business to mention?

It searches, reads a few pages, and cites the ones that answer the question clearly near the top, contain concrete details, and belong to a business whose listings are consistent across the web.

How long does GEO take to show results?

Typically two to four months to see citations and referrals move, with results compounding as more answer pages are indexed. It is not a replacement for ads if you need leads this week.

Is GEO different from SEO?

They share the fundamentals. GEO emphasizes being quotable: short direct answers, facts, FAQ and tables, rather than ranking alone.

What does the Ratz Levad GEO package include?

Audit, 50 answer pages from your real questions and prices, structured data, indexing, listings cleanup and analytics with AI referral tracking, from $1,900, delivered in about a week. Optional content retainer $470 a month.

Can I do GEO myself?

Yes. Write ten direct answer pages, add FAQ schema, fix your Google Business Profile, submit a sitemap, and check ten questions in each engine monthly. The package exists to do it faster and at scale.
